New research published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition suggests that eating raisins may provide the same workout boost as sports chews.
Conducted by researchers at the University of California-Davis, the study evaluated the effects that natural versus commercial carbohydrate supplements have on endurance running performance. Runners depleted their glycogen stores in an 80-minute 75% V02 max run followed by a 5k time trial. Runners completed three randomized trials (raisins, chews and water only) separated by seven days. Findings included:
- Those that ingested raisins or sports chews ran their 5k on average one minute faster than those that ingested only water
- Eating raisins and sports chews promoted higher carbohydrate oxidation compared to water only

Grape sugar in tablets.
posted by Michel on 25 Jul 2012 at 9:21 pmAbout 35 years ago, as I was readying myself for a 10K race, a friend gave me a couple refined grape sugar tablets in the shape of a well known effervescent medicine. He had gotten them from a family member who was a pro-athlete and were supposed to be pricey even in those days.
These sugar tablets were used by marathon runners at the time and contained only refined grape sugar, they were just plain white, extremely fine crystals (nothing like cane sugar crystals, and seemed to hold together only because they had been pressed together. I was told that this type of sugar didn't need much digestion and flowed directly in the blood stream which helped maintain performance and that it was definitely not going to give me more strength, just better endurance.
You were just supposed to let them melt in your mouth, you weren't carrying water bottles in those days... All I remember is that the race went easier than I had anticipated. I was never able to find those tablets in stores. I remember my friend saying this particular sugar was also called dextrose. I am not surprised at all raisins are just as efficient as sports chews, maybe there is a new product to be promoted here... besides raisins obviously...
